How To Optimize Energy Consumption and Reduce Carbon Emissions with Nexthink
Digital transformation is changing the way organizations globally function, but digital workplace technology that enables transformation comes with its own environmental cost.
Organizations are now becoming more aware of their responsibility to reduce and report on their environmental footprint. They are looking at solutions that provide the best insight to address this problem.
Watch : How to optimize energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions with Nexthink
The Nexthink Sustainable IT library pack enables teams to measure the energy consumption and carbon footprint of key elements in their IT infrastructure, identify areas of improvement and provide reporting data.
The library pack offers pre-configured remote actions, self-heal, and awareness campaigns to act and drive awareness.
Let us now see how to optimize energy consumption and carbon emissions with Nexthink.
Import the Sustainable IT content pack from the library. The dashboard provides pre-defined filters that help you drill down into specific device specifications or locations. Additionally, the location type filter gives insight on remote vs. office employees – a key use case in determining the source, responsibility of digital-related environmental impact.
Overview
This tab gives you a high-level overview of your device’s overall energy consumption, associated CO2 emissions, and the Sustainable IT: Awareness Survey campaign results. This information helps to determine, if you want to quickly report on your devices' impact and carbon footprint, along with a measure of your employees’ sentiment towards the importance of the subject,
Windows laptop footprint
This tab displays energy consumption insight from the remote action Get Consumption Information hourly, this retrieves the hourly energy consumption of all active Windows laptops that successfully executed the remote action.
The data is a drill down of all the key hardware components, consolidated over time, and automatically converted into CO2 emissions using a global carbon emission factor.
Additional device footprint
This tab focusses on other device types', their estimated energy consumption and CO2
emissions. This data shows the environmental footprint of the various devices, that tells us if the recent sustainability policies function as intended.
Network and Outlook footprint
This tab displays reporting on network traffic and its potential impact, as every GB of traffic has a related environmental cost as data must be stored in servers and propagated between clients across various networks.
Although no direct energy and carbon footprint calculations are made on the dashboard, the impact can be measured using the Sustainable IT calculations documentation available for Nexthink Community users.
Footprint reduction opportunities
This tab focuses on actionable insight and remediation opportunities for footprint reduction, this includes:
Abnormal consumption: Using the Get Consumption Information hourly remote action, this widget shows devices consuming over 7000 Wh, an abnormally high consumption level according to research.
Best practice compliance shows devices are running settings or applications that
force an unnecessarily high consumption.
For Windows This widget displays inefficient power plans (not balanced). The remote
action campaign Set power plan can ask users to change their power plan automatically.
For macOS: This widget returns devices with Hibernation disabled. Here, use Caffeinated mode, or do not have a sleep policy defined. These devices can be investigated for change in policies or raising awareness.
Inefficient device activity focuses on devices running with minimal or no user interaction. The table helps to identify devices with the worst uptime-to-interaction ratio, and the KPIs provide the means to quickly investigate these specific devices.
Inefficient server activity: This breaks down servers (with a collector installed),potentially running unnecessarily due to low uptime or traffic. These could be shut down or consolidated.
In this way Nexthink can help you optimize energy consumption and carbon emissions and make your organization.
