Most tech leaders paint a rosy picture of artificial intelligence. They talk about productivity gains, innovation, and limitless potential. Mustafa Suleyman isn't most tech leaders.
As the co-founder of DeepMind and now CEO of Microsoft AI, Suleyman has spent over a decade at the cutting edge of AI development. His 2023 book, The Coming Wave, doesn't shy away from uncomfortable truths about the technology reshaping our world. While others celebrate each new breakthrough, Suleyman asks the more urgent question: Are we ready for what comes next?
Who is Mustafa Suleyman?
In 2010, Suleyman co-founded DeepMind with Demis Hassabis. The company pioneered new approaches to machine learning, teaching computers to solve seemingly impossible problems through practice and feedback. Google acquired DeepMind for £400 million in 2014, and Suleyman became head of applied AI.
After leaving DeepMind in 2019, he founded Inflection AI to develop Pi, a personalised chatbot. In March 2024, Microsoft brought him on as CEO of its consumer AI division, where he now oversees the integration of ChatGPT-style AI into Windows, Copilot, Bing, and Edge.
The Core Argument of 'The Coming Wave'
Written with researcher Michael Bhaskar, The Coming Wave makes a bold claim: AI will rapidly reduce the cost of achieving almost any goal. Problem-solving capabilities that once required teams of experts will soon be available cheaply to anyone.
Suleyman calls this "the plummeting cost of power." The implications go far beyond chatbots and image generators. He envisions a future where products are "grown" from synthetic biological materials using carbon pulled from the atmosphere, and organisms are designed with the precision of today's computer chips.
But the book isn't a techno-utopian manifesto. Suleyman identifies four aspects of the AI revolution that create genuine catastrophe potential: asymmetric effects (where small groups gain enormous power), hyper-evolution (the unprecedented speed of change), omni-use (applicable to nearly everything), and autonomy (systems that operate independently).
To navigate these dangers, he proposed ten strategies for "containment" to keep humanity from either societal collapse or AI-enabled totalitarianism, from additional work on safety features to theoretical international treaties.
The Problem with 'Pessimism Aversion'
Here's where Suleyman breaks from the pack. He believes tech leaders suffer from what he calls "pessimism aversion"—the tendency to dismiss AI dangers with a wave of the hand. It's easier to focus on exciting possibilities than wrestle with difficult questions about regulation, safety, and long-term consequences.
This isn't just an academic concern. Microsoft's latest Copilot updates illustrate both the promise and peril. The AI assistant now has a humanlike voice, can see your screen, and offers improved reasoning through OpenAI's o1 model. Copilot Vision lets you ask real-time questions about what's on your screen. Microsoft is even experimenting with AI agents that could book appointments or make purchases on your behalf.
Suleyman acknowledges the appeal: "AI will democratise simply doing things." But he insists on getting the fundamentals right. "We've got to get the security part right, we've got to get the privacy part right," he told Wired. As AI becomes more intimate and personal, trust becomes paramount.
What This Means for Knowledge Workers
If you work with information for a living, Suleyman's predictions should give you pause. The same AI that handles customer service queries today could be drafting reports, analysing data, and making strategic recommendations tomorrow.
The question isn't whether AI will transform knowledge work. It's already happening. The question is whether we'll shape that transformation thoughtfully or let it happen to us.
Suleyman's willingness to voice concerns sets him apart. While many tech executives tout AI as an unalloyed good, he's mapping the territory between utopia and dystopia. That honesty matters, especially coming from someone building the very technologies he's warning us about.

Suleyman's perspective offers a blueprint for engaging with AI more responsibly. Acknowledge the risks alongside the benefits. Demand transparency and safety measures. Push for regulation that protects people without stifling innovation.
